Lakeview implemented its "Remote School Plan" for the first time during the recent snowstorm. During this session Connie White, Technology Director of Lakeview Academy, shared the required pre-planning design, the benefits, and the essential elements needed to launch a "Remote School Plan" at your school.

A) World Languages and Rosetta Stone

What happens when a school evaluates the meaning of its mission statement, eliminates its traditional Spanish program, and adopts an innovative approach to language instruction using Rosetta Stone? In this session, participants explored ways in which Trinity School’s World Languages program (where students in K-6 have the option of taking one of 23 languages) is shifting notions of teaching and learning from a teacher-centric to a student-centric model. The conversation included discussion related to technology support and management for an internet-based program and newly created hybrid classroom. As schools shift to online learning, what types of changes are needed in the infrastructure, what additional types of equipment must be purchased, and what Professional Development is needed to insure a smooth and seamless learning process for the student, educator, and parent?

B) Modeling and Fabrication

Come explore the world of digital fabrication! Lovett is one of the three partner working with the University of Virginia's Currry School of Education in a pilot STEM program. How can some Sketchup-like software, color printers, and 2D fabricators build deeper understanding of math concepts and support STEM interests? Discussed was the partnership, how to identify the technology, how to consider the pedagogy, and then how to build our own simple fabrications.

C) Computer Science and POV-Ray

POV-Ray is a free program that interprets text files describing three dimensional scenes and renders them using a technique called ray tracing. (Pixar uses ray tracing to create their films.) The language that describes the scenes is a rich playground for programmers, and the resulting pictures can be beautiful in a truly artistic sense, which might be a powerful attraction for students who are visuallyinclined. In this session attendees learned how to position and transform objects in 3D space, compose complex scenes out of simple objects, apply effects such as color and reflection, and use advanced language constructs like variables, looping and abstraction. D) IT Roundtable: Cloud Computing
